Doreen is a fun, trashy, and low-class woman with no filter and a frequent case of verbal diarrhea. You can't really love her but neither can you hate her. You can, however, respect her for being herself. This book was funny, witty, and very entertaining and I highly recommend it.Doreen is trailer park all the way, until her trailer burns. So the spiral of hilarity and adventure begins. From Louisiana to Florida we follow her and her daughters and laugh at their, or should I say Doreen's, exploits. You aren't meant to love her in this book but you can secretly envy her spunk and "don't care what other people think of me" attitude.
In the end Doreen and her kiddos redeem themselves and worm their way into your heart and I'm quite glad I stumbled upon this book. I love the humor and creativity and look forward to the next one.

Review of "Doreen"
By Dennis Ward
Reading Leonardo Acebo’s debut novel "Doreen" was a fun romp through the life of Doreen MacCrullers, queen of the trailer park. Doreen is past her prime and lives life by her own rules. She has been tossed aside by a platoon of men like a used Kleenex in a hurricane. Suffering middle age, she struggles to support herself and three daughters by any means necessary. Her troubles snowball into an avalanche after her trailer burns to the ground leaving the family homeless. Doreen has no qualms about employing petty theft, extortion, and grand theft auto to put her life back on track. In addition, she is not beyond casual sexual encounters to advance her cause and scratch a certain itch that further demeans her self-esteem.
The police are hot on her trail after they discover the dead, naked corpse of a hotel owner where fugitive Doreen and her girls bedded for the night. A "Thelma and Louise,"r Gulf States tour begins as Doreen escapes in a stolen BMW to the promised land Daytona Beach, Florida, hoping to find refuge with a long lost, rich elderly auntie.
Acebo’s character of Doreen has few redeeming qualities in the beginning of his novel. She is likeable only in a Jerry Springer Show kind of way. I was struck by Doreen’s blind ambition to have a better life by any means. She is relentless and has no compunction in teaching her daughters her bad habits.
Over the course of the story, Doreen surmounts impossible odds to gain a better life. I reflected about the vast number of Doreens who end up in the penal system, drug addicted, mentally disabled, or without any hope in life but to slide into a continual downward slope.
Acebo’s Doreen not only survived her legal tangles but became a wealthy heiress. She is truly standing under a golden star. In the end, we see Doreen accept responsibility for some of her bad decisions and take accountability. I found the shift and arc in Doreen’s character the most pleasing part of the book. She was redeemed, but will the gorgeous oldest daughter follow in her mother’s footsteps? It seems the die might be cast.
The comedy and dysfunctional foibles of Doreen will further be written in the sequel Doreen Blonde Ambition. I look forward to following the trail of cigarette butts and dirty underwear left by the pretty, sweet Doreen.
She's loud, she's foul-mouthed, she's slutty, she's dishonest, she has anger management issues and absolutely no impulse control. She is Doreen McCrullers.
From the first page to the last, this hilarious book grabs you by the scruff of the neck and doesn't let go. You'll gasp with shock and terror. You'll scream with laughter. You'll even have the odd 'awwww' moment as you follow the eponymous heroine and her wildly dysfunctional, but at bottom cohesive, family through a rake's progress of farcical, dangerous and often sordid adventures. From blackmail to shoplifting to theft of motor vehicles to rifling corpses, Doreen will stop at nothing to take care of her children.
Highly recommended to all but the prissy.
After investing in about a third of this book I found it impossible to care about any of the caricatured characters, the cheesy dialog or the implausible story line. Gave up on it and deleted it off my reader. That's $4.99 and two hours of my life I would really like to have back.
Very entertaining! Full of twists, cliff hangers and unexpected moments. Can't wait for his next book! What's in store for Ms. Doreen and her trailer trash children next?
Doreen Blonde Ambition
I wouldn't say this book was better or worse than the first book. Doreen Blonde Ambition is funny and adventurous. The McCullers are a little more promiscuous this round and a little more hilarious. I've decided that when I grow up I want to be just like Betsy, seriously. That little girl is smarter than most grown people I know. And the plot O.M.G the plot of this book is great , Arabs, movie stars, crooked Hollywood and Libby OH MY! Crystal and Mark are they getting by?!.... Just when you think you know where this book is going, you think you have the whole story figured out Leonardo Acebo hits you with something that leaves you slack jawed or totally in a fit of giggles. Doreen is still the same Doreen but you see her striving to be a bit better, yet not let money change her. Over all I really enjoyed this book and I still maintain Leonardo Acebo is an amazing writer with a gift to really captivate you and drag you into the story. Seriously, you can't function as a human being properly until you've finished this book. This is another one of those "I'll Just read one more chapter" books that turns into "Oh shoot I read the whole thing!" I would certainly recommend this book to read and over all give it two thumbs WAY up and 5 stars. I seriously hope that Mr. Acebo continues to write these adventurous and hilarious books, because the McCullers are my favorite fictional family! ) You aced it once again Mr. Acebo!! Thank you! )
